The rental search in Zeeland

In Zeeland, Addressly has pages for two neighbouring cities on Walcheren: Middelburg, the provincial capital, and Vlissingen on the coast. Because they are so close together, you usually don't need to choose between them. For many renters, they form one search area.

On this page you can read which neighbourhoods make good starting points in each city, what to look out for in a listing and how to combine both cities in one search. The city pages then show today's listings.

HZ University of Applied Sciences has locations in both Vlissingen and Middelburg, and Middelburg is also home to University College Roosevelt. Students are therefore looking for rooms and small homes in both cities too.

Cities in Zeeland

Middelburg has a historic centre with listed buildings along old streets and waterways. Vlissingen lies on the Westerschelde, with a seafront boulevard and an old centre around the Bellamypark. Both cities have a station on the same railway line, which ends in Vlissingen.

Because the two cities are so close together, your choice depends mainly on the neighbourhood and the home, not the city. So first decide what kind of setting you want: historic and central, by the water, or a quieter residential area.

Middelburg

A historic address in the Binnenstad and a home in Dauwendaele call for different questions at a viewing. The centre has listed buildings along old streets and waterways; Dauwendaele has its own shopping centre, schools and sports facilities. The green ramparts around the Binnenstad are another place to focus your search: a central address doesn't have to be among the shops.

For an upper-floor home in the centre, ask about the stairs, storage and floor plan before arranging a viewing. An attractive facade tells you little about room for a desk or a bike. Griffioen, Nieuw Middelburg and Klarenbeek-Veersepoort are other neighbourhoods to compare, and Mortiere borders Dauwendaele. Note that the municipality also includes Arnemuiden and Nieuw- en Sint Joosland.

Vlissingen

A balcony on the boulevard and a flat near the Bellamypark both put you close to city life, but they call for different questions. On the waterfront, check how sheltered the outdoor space is; near bars and restaurants, pay attention to which side the bedroom faces. A sea view is one consideration, not the only one.

The Oude Binnenstad mixes homes with shops, businesses and nightlife. Scheldekwartier, with the Scheldestad area around Dok van Perry, directly adjoins the centre; ask there whether there is work near the entrance and whether communal areas will be ready when you move in. If you travel by train, judge the journey to the station separately from the appeal of living by the water.

Searching across Zeeland

Two cities, one search area

Include both Middelburg and Vlissingen in your search profile. Because the cities sit side by side, you see more listings without changing your daily journey much. Do check how you would get to your work, studies or the station from each address; distances vary by neighbourhood within both cities.

Living by the water

A home on the boulevard or with a view of the water is appealing, but look at the practical side too. How sheltered is the balcony? Where would you keep your bike? How do you reach the home in bad weather? A listing that emphasises its location says little about the layout and upkeep of the home itself.

Old centres and upper-floor homes

The centres of Middelburg and Vlissingen have many older buildings, often with homes above shops or restaurants. Take a short checklist to the viewing: ventilation, heating, daylight, noise between floors, the stairs and storage. Ask which costs come on top of the base rent and whether any facilities are shared. For a home in the centre, visit in the evening as well.

Municipality and place name

The municipality of Middelburg also includes Arnemuiden and Nieuw- en Sint Joosland. If you want to live in the city itself, check the full address of every listing. The same goes for Vlissingen: look beyond the place name above the photos.

How Addressly helps

Addressly monitors matching listings in both cities and can send viewing requests from your own inbox. You stay in contact with the landlord yourself, and you can adjust your search profile at any time if a neighbourhood or type of home turns out not to suit you.

Frequently asked questions

How far apart are Middelburg and Vlissingen?

They are neighbouring cities on Walcheren, and both have a station on the same railway line. That is why it often makes sense to search in both at once. Do check the journey from the specific address.

Is Arnemuiden part of Middelburg?

Yes. The municipality of Middelburg also includes Arnemuiden and Nieuw- en Sint Joosland. A listing under β€˜Middelburg’ may therefore be in one of those places; check the full address if you want to live in the city itself.

Where do students study in Zeeland?

HZ University of Applied Sciences has locations in Vlissingen and Middelburg, and University College Roosevelt is in Middelburg. Students therefore look for rooms and small homes in both cities.

What is Scheldekwartier?

Scheldekwartier is an area of Vlissingen that directly adjoins the centre, with Scheldestad around Dok van Perry. The area is being developed; for a home there, ask about work near the entrance and whether communal areas will be ready when you move in.

What should I look for in a home on the boulevard?

Check how sheltered the outdoor space is, which side the bedroom faces and how you get your bike and shopping inside. A sea view is a plus, but the layout and upkeep of the home itself matter at least as much.
