Flevoland is the youngest province in the Netherlands: it has existed since 1986 and is largely land reclaimed from the water. You can see that in its towns. Streets and neighbourhoods were laid out to a plan, and the housing stock is much newer than in the rest of the country.
Almere is the largest city and has its own Addressly page. This guide also covers Lelystad, the provincial capital, as well as Dronten, Zeewolde and Emmeloord. For each place you can read where it lies and what to look out for in a listing.
If you work outside Flevoland, the connection to Amsterdam, Utrecht or Zwolle is often the key question. This page therefore covers that in detail too.
Cities in Flevoland
Almere lies in the south-west, closest to Amsterdam. Lelystad is further north-east, on the Markermeer. Between the two lies the Oostvaardersplassen nature reserve. Dronten lies east of Lelystad, Zeewolde in the south on the border lakes, and Emmeloord in the Noordoostpolder.
Only Almere has its own Addressly page; you can still add the other places to your search profile.
Almere has only existed since the 1970s and is made up of separate districts. Almere Stad has the centre, the main station and most facilities. Almere Poort is the newest part and lies closest to Amsterdam. Almere Haven is the oldest part, smaller in scale and on the water. Almere Buiten and Almere Hout are more spacious. Choose a district first: building age, density and distance to a station differ between them.
The provincial capital, on the Markermeer. Lelystad has trains to Almere and Amsterdam, and via the Hanzelijn to Zwolle, which makes it interesting in two directions. Like Almere, the town was laid out to a plan, with a centre around the station and residential areas around it. For any home, check how far the address is from the station.
No Addressly city page yet; you can still add Lelystad to your search profile.
Dronten
Lies east of Lelystad and, since the Hanzelijn was built, has its own station on the line between Lelystad and Zwolle. The municipality of Dronten also includes the villages of Biddinghuizen and Swifterbant, so check whether a listing is in Dronten itself or in one of those villages.
No Addressly city page yet; you can still add Dronten to your search profile.
Zeewolde
Lies in the south of the province, on the Wolderwijd and close to the Horsterwold forest. Zeewolde has no train station, so the commute usually means a car or bus. It mainly suits people looking for peace and greenery who have checked the daily journey carefully.
No Addressly city page yet; you can still add Zeewolde to your search profile.
Emmeloord
The main town of the Noordoostpolder, with the Poldertoren tower in the centre. Emmeloord has no train station; if you work outside the polder, you travel by bus or car. The Noordoostpolder is older than the rest of Flevoland and was drained in the 1940s.
No Addressly city page yet; you can still add Emmeloord to your search profile.
Searching across Flevoland
Towards Amsterdam or towards Zwolle
If you work in Amsterdam, Almere and Lelystad are the obvious choices; Almere has several stations on the line towards Amsterdam. If you work in Zwolle or the east of the country, Lelystad and Dronten on the Hanzelijn are more interesting. Choose the places on the line that fits your journey.
Districts and distance to the station
The towns in Flevoland were laid out to a plan, with residential areas around a centre and a station. Within one town, the distance to the station can therefore vary a lot. For every listing, check which station is closest and whether you can get there by bike or bus.
Places without a station
Zeewolde and Emmeloord have no train station. There you depend on the bus or a car. Check the connection at the times you would actually travel, including early starts and late returns.
New builds
Building is still under way in the newer parts of Almere. For a new-build home, check the handover date, which facilities are already open and whether the street and surroundings will be finished when you move in. An artist's impression of a project is not a home you can rent today.
Water and greenery
Flevoland has plenty of water and greenery, from the border lakes near Zeewolde to the Oostvaardersplassen between Almere and Lelystad. A home by the water or near nature is appealing, but check the practical side too: the distance to the shops, the station and your work, and how you get there in bad weather.
How Addressly helps
In your Addressly search profile you can select Almere and other places in Flevoland together. Addressly monitors matching listings and can send viewing requests from your own inbox. Replies from landlords come to you.
Lelystad. Almere, however, is the largest city in the province.
Which place is closest to Amsterdam?
Almere, and in particular Almere Poort, the district closest to Amsterdam. Do check the journey from your front door to your work, because it differs by district.
Can I live in Lelystad or Dronten and work in Zwolle?
Both lie on the Hanzelijn between Lelystad and Zwolle. Whether it works depends on your door-to-door journey time at your real times.
Does Emmeloord have a train station?
No. You reach Emmeloord and the rest of the Noordoostpolder by bus or car.
Are Biddinghuizen and Swifterbant part of Dronten?
Yes, they are villages in the municipality of Dronten. A listing under βDrontenβ may therefore be in one of those villages.
