For many renters, the province of Groningen revolves around the city of Groningen, home to the University of Groningen, Hanze University of Applied Sciences and the UMCG hospital. The city has its own Addressly page with today's listings. This guide looks further: at the places around the city and elsewhere in the province where you can also search.
That is especially useful if you work or study in the city but don't necessarily need to live there. Around Groningen are villages and smaller towns with a train station or a bus connection to the city. Whether such a place works for you depends on your destination, your working hours and how you want to travel.
In parts of the province there is another factor: gas extraction has damaged homes there, and houses are being reinforced. You can read more about that below.
Groningen city lies in the middle of the province. Haren is directly south of it and has been part of the municipality of Groningen since 2019. Hoogezand-Sappemeer and Winschoten lie east of the city, on the railway towards Germany. Leek lies west of the city, and Delfzijl in the north-east, on the Eems.

A student city through and through. Rooms and studios near the centre or the university go quickly at the end of summer, when many new students arrive at once. The Binnenstad is closest to the university and the nightlife; Korrewegwijk and Oosterparkwijk are further out and often quieter. Zernike Campus is on the north side of the city, so check exactly where your lectures or work are.
Lies directly south of the city and has been part of the municipality of Groningen since 2019. Haren has its own station on the line to Assen and Zwolle and is greener and quieter than the city itself. For anyone working or studying in the city, it can be a quieter addition; do check the route from the address.

Hoogezand-Sappemeer belongs to the municipality of Midden-Groningen and lies east of the city, on the railway from Groningen to Winschoten. It is a town in its own right, with shops and facilities. Listings sometimes say only ‘Hoogezand’ or only ‘Sappemeer’; check the address and which station is closest.

The largest town in the municipality of Oldambt, in the east of the province. Winschoten has a station on the same railway as Hoogezand-Sappemeer, towards the German border. It is further from Groningen city, so it mainly suits people who work in the region itself or don't mind a longer journey.

Lies west of Groningen city, in the municipality of Westerkwartier. Leek has no train station, so you travel to the city by bus, car or bike. Check that connection at the times you would actually travel, and see which facilities Leek itself offers.

A port town on the Eems in the north-east, part of the municipality of Eemsdelta. Delfzijl has a station on the line to Groningen, via Appingedam. It lies in the area affected by gas extraction; for a home there, ask whether there has been damage or whether reinforcement is planned.

Start by asking whether you really need to live in Groningen city. If you are studying, a room in the city is usually most convenient. If you are working, a place with a direct train or bus connection can be a good alternative. Choose places that lie in the same direction as your destination, and test the journey at your real times.
From Groningen city, railway lines run in several directions, including to Assen and Zwolle, to Winschoten, to Delfzijl and to Leeuwarden. Places without a station, such as Leek, depend on the bus. For every listing, check how far the address is from the station or bus stop.
Gas extraction has damaged homes in parts of the province, and houses are being reinforced or replaced. For a home in those areas, ask whether damage has been reported, whether reinforcement work is planned and what that means for your tenancy. At the end of summer, many new students arrive in the city at the same time. If you are looking for a room in that period, start well in advance. A place outside the city can help then, as long as the journey to your university or college is manageable.

Haren has been part of the municipality of Groningen since 2019, but it is a separate village south of the city, with its own station. A listing in Haren is therefore outside the city itself.
Both places have a station on the railway to Groningen city. Whether it works depends on the journey from your front door to your work; check it at your real times.
In parts of the province, homes have been damaged by gas extraction or are being reinforced. Ask the landlord about reported damage and planned reinforcement, and what that means for your tenancy.
