Limburg is a long, narrow province, and you notice that when searching for a rental. Maastricht, the provincial capital, is in the far south, between the Belgian and German borders. Heerlen lies in the Parkstad area in the south-east. Weert is in central Limburg, close to the border with North Brabant.

Maastricht is a university city, home to Maastricht University, which attracts many international students and researchers. They look for rooms and small homes in an old city centre.
Cities in Limburg
Heerlen is the closest city on this page to Maastricht, and the two are linked by the Heerlen–Maastricht railway line. Weert is considerably further north, closer to Eindhoven than to Maastricht. So treat the three cities as separate search areas.
If you are searching in South Limburg, the choice is mainly between Maastricht and Heerlen, or a combination of both. Weert is a separate choice for anyone who needs to be in central Limburg or towards Brabant.
A historic centre around the Vrijthof and the Sint Servaasbrug, with housing stock centuries older than today's demand. Because the centre is compact, a few hundred metres can decide whether a home is within walking distance of your destination.
Maastricht University has buildings in the city centre and on the Randwyck campus. Wyck lies between the centre and the station, with Céramique as its newer extension along the Maas. Sint Pieter is quieter, on the south side near the Jekerdal. A listing that only says ‘Maastricht’ could mean any of these.
Heerlen has two centres to consider: the city centre, with shops, workplaces and nightlife, and Hoensbroek, with its own shopping area in Centrum-De Dem. Which one would you actually use for errands and evenings out?
The station deserves attention too. Heerlen-Woonboulevard is on the Heerlen–Maastricht line and is a different destination from the main station. Eikenderveld lies between the centre and the green surroundings of Terworm castle; Grasbroek, Musschemig and Schandelen adjoin the Maankwartier. In Hoensbroek, you can compare Centrum-De Dem with Mariarade.
Central Weert covers the historic area inside the singels, Maaspoort and the station surroundings. Two listings that both say ‘centre’ can therefore be in very different places. Outside the centre, Boshoven (with Bosserhof) and Moesel (with Oranjeplein) each have their own neighbourhood shopping centre.
Molenakker and Leuken are other neighbourhoods to compare. The municipality also includes villages such as Stramproy; check the full address when a listing only says ‘Weert’.
If you are looking at a home on a shopping street, come back after the shops close and listen from the bedroom. Around Bosserhof or Oranjeplein, walk the route you would take with your shopping and see where your bike could go.
You can combine Maastricht and Heerlen if you work or study in South Limburg and the train connection works for your times. Weert fits better with a search that also looks towards Eindhoven. Check the journey carefully before adding Weert to a search centred on Maastricht, or the other way round.
Older buildings and upper-floor homes
The centres of Maastricht and Weert have many older buildings and upper-floor homes. For such a home, ask about the stairs, the storage, where the bedroom is and the total monthly costs, including service charges. For a home above shops or restaurants, come back when they are closing or open.
International students and researchers
Coming to Limburg for Maastricht University? Check whether you mainly need to be in the city centre or on the Randwyck campus, and compare the rental period with the length of your studies or contract. For a room, ask how many people share the kitchen and bathroom, and put energy and internet costs next to the base rent.
The right station
If you travel by train, check which station belongs to the address. Besides its main station, Heerlen also has Heerlen-Woonboulevard, and in Weert the station surroundings count as part of the centre. Walk or cycle the route from the front door to the platform yourself when you go to a viewing.

The university has buildings in the city centre and on the Randwyck campus, among other places. The location you need determines which neighbourhoods are most convenient.
Is Weert closer to Eindhoven or to Maastricht?
Closer to Eindhoven. Weert lies in central Limburg, near the border with North Brabant. If you work in the Eindhoven area, Weert can be an option; do check the journey from the address.
Is Céramique the same as Wyck?
Céramique is the newer extension of Wyck along the Maas, made up mostly of apartment buildings. Both are close to the centre and the station; judge per address which building and street suit you.
