Emmen is the largest municipality in Drenthe, both in population and in area, but it is not the provincial capital -- that's Assen. The town began as an esdorp (a farming village on sandy soil) and grew during the twentieth century through peat-colony reclamation and an active industrialisation policy into today's town, with districts such as Emmermeer, Emmerhout, Angelslo, Bargeres and Rietlanden surrounding the original centre.

Station Emmen sits at the end of the railway line from Zwolle. The onward route to Stadskanaal was closed and dismantled after the Second World War, which is why Emmen has been the line's terminus ever since. The line itself is electrified and runs an hourly Arriva service; along the way are also the stations Emmen Zuid and Emmen Bargeres. Keep this in mind if you travel by train toward the west of the country.

Emmen is also known for Wildlands Adventure Zoo, successor to the former Noorder Dierenpark, and lies via the A37 about a quarter of an hour from the German border and the Emsland region. If you're comparing the town to the rest of Drenthe, keep in mind that the municipality also includes sprawling villages such as Klazienaveen and Nieuw-Amsterdam -- a listing under "Emmen" could just as well be located in one of those villages.

First decide whether you want to live in the town of Emmen itself or whether one of the surrounding villages also suits your commute.
